WINTER PARK, Fla. - The No. 15 University of Tampa (14-7-1) men's soccer team suffered its first shutout loss of the season, falling to Barry University (11-3-3) by a 1-0 decision in the opening round of the NCAA South Regional at Rollins College.
Barry's Mark Anderson scored the game's lone goal in the 54th minute, giving the Bucs its eventual game-winner on a score from Sascha Koettig.
"As a coach, you have years that are magical and this was one of them for me," says head coach Adrian Bush. "We did not reach our goal of national champions but I'm so proud of what this team was able to achieve this year."
UT's Kemal Malcolm led the team with five shots, including one on goal. Lister Warren also had a pair of shots for the Spartans. Freshman David Niepel totaled six saves in the contest.
The Buccaneers finished the game with 17 shots as the Spartans were credited with 12. Barry also held an 8-4 advantage on shots on goal.
UT concluded the 2010 season after winning the program's second Sunshine State Conference tournament.
"This group of seniors is incredible," states Bush. "They are better men today than when they walked in here four years ago and have been instrumental in turning this program into a national soccer powerhouse. Soccer can be cruel a cruel game at times, this was definitely one of them but it doesn't take away from the commitment and hard work they gave this program. I love this team and The University of Tampa."
