West Texas A&M men's basketball notes

FULL GAME NOTES

BUFFALOES HOST RHEMA, VISIT TAMU– The West Texas A&M Buffaloes play a non-con- ference game this week, as they host Rhema Bible, Thursday, Dec. 9, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. CST. The Buffs then travel to Commerce, Texas, Saturday, Dec. 11, to visit Lone Star Conference mem- ber Texas A&M-Commerce in 7 p.m. CST start. The Texas A&M-Commerce game will be broadcast on KGNC-AM 710, with Phil Woodall mikeside, beginning 30 minutes prior to tipoff.

THE RECORDS – West Texas A&M is 6-0, having overcome a 15-point first half deficit to defeat Cameron, 76-67, in overtime, Thursday evening. WT will be looking for its best start since the 1997- 98, when the Buffs opened the year at 15-0. Rhema Bible is 1-9, while TAMU-C is 5-1, having dropped a 88-86 decision at Abilene Christian ths past Saturday. The Lions are off until Saturday.
serIes hIstOrY – This will be the first meeting between WT and Rhema, while the Buffs hold a 42-25 series advantage over Texas A&M-Commerce. WT took a 92-71 win in Canyon last Dec. 21.

HEAD COACH RICK COOPER– Rick Cooper, who ranks as West Texas A&M’s all-time winningest men’s basketball coach, is in his 18th year at the helm of the Buffs program. He has compiled a 333-165 (.668) record over 495 games at the school and is the only head coach in WT men’s bas- ketball history to reach the 300-win plateau. Equally impressive is Cooper’s 22-year career record, which finds him just 15 wins shy of the 500-win mark, at 484-212 (.695). Cooper spent six seasons as the head coach at his alma mater, Wayland Baptist, prior to joining the Buff program. He has led the Buffs to four LSC South Division titles, as well as eight NCAA postseason appearances.

LAST TIME OUT– Playing their second overtime contest in as many games, West Texas A&M pulled away in the extra period to take a 79-68 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State, Saturday evening. The Buffaloes, normally a 79 percent shooting team from the foul stripe, hit just 61 percent for the evening, but came on in the overtime period, hitting 11 of 12 free throws as they outscored the visiting Bulldogs by a 17-6 margin
