Griffon Football remains unbeaten at home with 42-14 victory over Emporia State

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team remained unbeaten at home in 2010 with a 42-14 victory over Emporia State. Western controlled the ball for just over 33 minutes in the ball game snapping a two game losing skid. Andrew Mead had a career high 11 receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns helping Western improve to 6-3 overall and 4-3 in MIAA action. Western has won six consecutive games in the series.

The Griffons had no problems offensively in the first half tallying 259 yards of total offense with a well balanced 158 through the air and 101 on the ground. The Griffons opened up the half taking the ball 51 yards on four plays with Thomas Hodges plunging in from one yard out. Western led 6-0 after the Brad Beckwith missed extra point.

The Hornets responded right away putting a four play 67 yard drive together taking the lead 7-6 with 11:23 to play in the first quarter. Sheldon Smith plunged in from five yards out for the Hornets first score.

The score stayed that way until early in the second quarter when Hodges plunged for his second one yard touchdown. Drew Newhart connected with David Fowler on the two point conversion giving Western the 14-7 lead with 14:06 to play in the half.

Western took a 21-7 lead when Newhart found Mead from four yards out with 6:43 to play in the half. After a Derwin Hall 85 yard kickoff return the Hornets got set up on the Griffon 12 yard line. Tracey Hageman caught a four yard pass from Smith cutting the lead to 21-14 with 4:07 to play in the opening frame. Western was not done as they scored with 21 seconds left when Newhart plunged in from one yard out capping off a 10 play 55 yard drive.

Thomas Hodges led the Griffons on the ground with 48 yards and two touchdowns while Newhart completed 11-of-17 passes for 158 yards. Mead caught five passes for 56 yards and a score. The Hornets had 117 yards with 52 coming on the ground. Smith had seven carries for 43 yards.

Matt Glades led the Griffons with five tackles while Matt Rosenhamer led the Hornets with six tackles in the first half of play.

Western opened the second half with a big defensive stop in their territory. Western proceeded to take the ball 91 yards on 20 plays controlling the ball for 9:37. The drive was continued twice by Emporia State penalties, one on a roughing the punter.

Newhart found Mead in the back of the end zone on a fade route giving Western the 35-14 lead with 1:37 to play in the third quarter. Western put up one more score when Hodges scored his third one yard touchdown of the game with 9:31 left in the game. This marked a career high for rushing touchdowns in a game for Hodges.

Western finished with 437 yards of total offense with 289 coming through the air and 148 on the ground. Newhart completed 22-of-32 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Adam Clausen and Terrell Downing each had two receptions for Western. Hodges rushed 17 times for 72 yards and three scores.

Emporia State had 254 yards with 143 on the ground. Smith completed 5-of-11 passes for 98 yards and rushed 11 times for 92 yards. Shjuan Richardson had three receptions for 84 yards for ESU. ESU had 12 penalties for 112 yards.

Defensively Glades finished with six tackles while Sean Whiters and David Bass each recording five. ESU was led by David Harris with eight tackles.

The Griffons will play their last road game of the 2010 regular season on Saturday, November 6 when then travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm from Al. F. Caniglia Field.
