Warriors off to CCAA/PacWest Challenge

This Week's Opponents
@ CCAA/PacWest Challenge, San Francisco State

vs. NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR (1-4)

Series Notes: Both teams have split the series.  Grand Canyon and Cal State Stanislaus have only played in two contest against each other, both in tournament play.

The Last Time We Met... was on Dec. 12, 2009 which ended in a Warrior defeat 60-66 at the Humboldt Classic in Arcata. Katie Busi had 24 points.

About NDNU: The last time the Argonauts hit the court was at UC San Diego on Nov. 27, where they lost 94-54.  Laura Zasly and sister, Katie Zasly, averages 17 and 13 points per game, respectively. Pilar Mullins is averaging a team best 11.4 rebounds per game.


vs. #21 Grand Canyon (8-1)

Series Notes: The Warriors led the series against the Antelopes 9-3 in conference play until Grand Canyon left the CCAA in 2004.

The Last Time We Met... was on Dec. 13, 2008 with the Warriors winning 68-66 in a non-conference game. Gwen Page led the Warriors with 20 points.

About Grand Canyon: GCU is currently ranked #21 on the USA Today/ESPN Division II Top 25 coaches poll after going 2-0 in their last tournament against Seatle Pacific (74-69) and Northwest Nazarene (72-60). Samantha Murphy leads Grand Canyon with an average of 26.6 pts/gm.  Jallisa Butler is leading her team with 7.0 rebounds/gm.

What's on Tap
Fresh off a 2-0 weekend, the Warriors are off to San Franciso State this week for the CCAA/PacWest Challenge with games against Notre Dame de Namur and Grand Canyon at the Swamp.

Last Week
The Warriors went 2-0 in CCAA play with wins over Sonoma State, 78-72, in overtime and Humboldt State, 81-78.  Andreanna Marshall had two career nights with a combined total of 47 points.  Katie Busi was well rounded with 39 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks.  Lauren Godde had a career high with 15 rebounds Saturday.

Strong Defense Pays Off in the End
In Friday's contest against Sonoma State, the Warriors took a come from behind overtime win after taking the lead with just one minute of regualtion play.  The Warriors recorded a team high of 15 steals and forced 30 SSU turnovers.  Saturday, the Warriors out-rebounded their opponent for the first time against Humboldt State with 47 rebounds, 29 defensive boards.

Marshall Was On Fire
Senior guard Andreanna Marshall set a new school individual record with 18 free throws making Saturday against HSU (18 for 20). The previous record was 11 (set three times, last time by Katie Busi in 2009). Marshall averaged 23.5 points per game this past weekend and shot .452 from the floor.  Marshall had a career high of 30 points against Humboldt State and became the first Warrior to score 30 or more points since Busi scored 35 on Feb. 7, 2009 ... after last weekend's play, she is now second on the team in points with an average of 14.2 points per game.

Busi Hits New Career Mark
Center Katie Busi is currently ranked fourth in the record books with 1,060 career points.  Katie currently leads the Warriors with an average of 16.7 points per game, 9.5 rebounds per game … With 768 rebounds entering the weekend, she will need 232 to become just the second player in Warrior history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (Shannon Donnelly).

Go Godde!
Between her scoring and her crashing the boards, freshman Lauren Godde is off to a solid start in her collegiate career.  She previously set a new career record of 12 points against #21 Chico State at home on Nov. 25 ... Saturday, Lauren had a new career high and led the Warrior team in their defeat over the Humboldt State Lumberjacks with 15 rebounds.

Among the CCAA Leaders
As a team, the Warriors are third in scoring (74.5/gm), second in rebounding (41.2/gm), first in offensive rebounding (16.2/gm) first in steals (12.2/gm) and  also leads the conference in blocked shots (4.5/gm) … Katie Busi is fourth in scoring (16.7/gm), third in rebounding (9.5/gm), first in steals (2.8/gm) and also leads in blocked shots (2.5/gm) … Andreanna Marshall is tenth in scoring (14.2/gm), eighth in free throw percentage (.840) ... Christin Gowan is tied for fifth in assists (3.8/gm), 13th in free throw percentage (.762) ... Lauren Godde is 10th in rebounds (6.7/gm).

Head Coach Sharon Turner
Sharon Turner enters her ninth season as the Warriors' head coach with a career record of 75-150, entering the 2010-11 season. In her first season, in 2004-05, she led the Warriors to an NCAA Tournament apperance. In 2008-09, the Warriors qualified for the CCAA Championship tournament for the first time. Last year, Stanislaus finished tied for seventh but missed out on the conference tournament due to tiebreaker procedures.

CCAA Basketball Championships
The 2011 CCAA Men's & Women's Basketball Championship tournament will be held at the beginning of March. Eight teams qualify for the tournament with first round games on campus site March 1. The four winners will advance to the semifinals and finals in Hayward on the campus of Cal State East Bay. The winner of the tournament would receive the automatic bid for the NCAA tournament.
