UWF Women's Basketball Falls to Florida Tech, 73-57

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The University of West Florida women’s basketball team (7-5) fell to Florida Tech (10-1), 73-57, today at the Florida Tech Christmas Tournament in Melbourne, Fla. Jessica Young scored a season high 18 points in the game. Jade Howard and Octavia Brown were named to the all-tournament team.

UWF concludes the Florida Tech Christmas Tournament with a 1-1 record. On Saturday, UWF came back from being down 21 points at the half to win 61-60 over Saint Michael’s. Sher’Ryan Scott (Fort Deposit, Ala.) led UWF with a season-high 19 points. Florida Tech goes 2-0 in the tournament is now on a six game winning streak.

In the first half, West Florida got on the board with a free throw by Octavia Bearden (Tylertown, Miss.) cutting Florida Tech’s lead to two, 3-1. Two more free throws by Bearden tied the game, 7-7, with 13:46 remaining in the first half. Florida Tech then built a six-point lead. A jumper by Scott brought UWF within four, down 14-10 with 9:00 remaining in the half. Two free throws by Krissy Diggs (Hillsboro, Ala.) brought UWF within one, down 17-16. A Bearden free throw put UWF up 21-19 with 1:13 remaining in the half. The lead was short lived for the Argos when a jumper by Florida Tech’s Jasmire Brown tied the game at 21-21 with 23 seconds remaining. The half ended with the score tied at 21-21. For the half, Jessica Young (Hillsboro, Ala.) led the Argonauts with eight points, while Bearden added six.

UWF got into foul trouble in the second half, surpassing 10 team fouls with 10:03 still remaining in the game. UWF went up by two with a layup by Bearden, 23-21, with 18:25 remaining in the second half, but then Florida Tech built a lead. Florida Tech went up by seven, 32-25, on a layup by Briauna Hagins with 16:12 remaining. West Florida came within three, 34-31, on a layup by Young with 13:34 remaining. UWF tied the game at 39-39 following two free throws by Jade Howard (Salyersville, Ky.). UWF grabbed the 50-49 lead with 6:34 remaining on a jumper by Scott. It would be the last time UWF would lead the game, as Florida Tech pulled away. A good free throw by Bearden made the score 62-53, Florida Tech, with 2:33 remaining in the game. A jumper by Monique Thurman (Crestview) with 1:04 remaining brought UWF within 12, down 69-57. Two good free throws by Florida Tech’s Ashton McClairen with 48 seconds remaining would be the last points scored, as Florida Tech took the game, 73-57.

The UWF women’s basketball team will take a 10-day break for the holidays. The Argonauts will return to the court December 30th-31st to host the UWF Holiday Classic. West Florida will face Tuskegee on Dec. 30th at 2 p.m., and Harding on Dec. 31st at 2 p.m. The men’s team will also be in action, hosting the McDonald Fleming Moorhead UWF Christmas Classic. Between the two tournaments, eight games will be played over two days at the UWF Fieldhouse.
