Griffon Men Take Care of Washburn 103-82

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western men’s basketball defeated the Washburn Ichabods by a score of 103-82 in the MWSU Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The Griffons nailed a season high 16 long range shots improving to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in MIAA action. Western stays undefeated at home in MIAA action as P’Allen Stinnett scored a career high 33 points.

Both teams came out on fire in the first five minutes of play as Jeff Reid scored eight of the Ichabods first 15 points while Stinnett dumped in 12 of the Griffons first 14 points. Western trailed by one at 15-14 with 14:49 to play in the frame after Stinnett’s fourth three pointer.

Western went on a 20-3 run taking a 34-18 lead after another Stinnett three pointer with 10:22 to play in the frame. The Ichabods closed the half on a 26-21 run closing the Griffons gap to 11 at the half. The Ichabods outscored the Griffons 17-0 on second chance points while the Griffons got 26 points off the bench.

Western made 70.8-percent (17-24) of their field goals in the frame and sank 11-of-16 long range shots. Stinnett led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting which included 6-of-7 from long range. Jonathan Phelps scored 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting which included 4-of-6 from long range.

The Ichabods shot 33.3-percent (14-42) from the field and made 5-of-17 long range bombs. The Ichabods out rebounded the Griffons 25 to 15 with 18 coming on the offensive end of the floor. Reid dumped in 14 points while Logan Stutz scored 12.

Western continued its dominating play in the second half extending its lead to as many as 24 and never letting the Ichabods get closer than 12. Western finished the night scoring 27 points off 18 Washburn turnovers while the Ichabods scored 36 points in the paint. Western had 35 bench points to Washburn’s 12.

Western scored 100 points for the first time since November 15, 2005 when they defeated Manhattan Christen 107-59.

Western shot a season high 63.8-percent (30-47) from the field and shot a season high 57.1-percent (16-28) from long range. TJ Johnson scored 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting while Phelps had 18 points for the Griffons. Lavonte Douglas scored nine points and snared four rebounds in his opening game in a Griffon uniform.

Stutz led the Ichabods with 26 points while De’Andre Washington and Reid scored 17. Nate Daniels scored 10 points while Washington led Washburn on the boards with nine.

The Griffons will have a couple of weeks for Christmas break and will return to action on Sunday, January 2 to take on the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in St. Joseph. Game time is set for 3:30 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse.
