Two Patriots picked for PBC All-Academic Volleyball Team

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University juniors Hallie Legg and Amanda Mitchell have both been named to the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Volleyball All-Academic Team, while sophomore Liz Drewry garnered honorable mention recognition.

The team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the playing court. To be eligible, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of his team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor, achieve a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and have completed at least one full academic year at her current institution.

Legg, a 5-7 defensive specialist from Uniontown, Ohio, appeared in all 31 matches this season, starting 13 times, and was second on the team with 283 digs (2.55 per set) and fifth with 15 service aces.

Defensively, she posted a serve receive percentage of .937 covering nearly 350 receptions.  Substituting for an injured teammate, she also spent several matches setting and tallied 121 assists.
She has not missed a match in her three seasons at Francis Marion.

In the classroom, Legg has earned a 3.43 grade point average as a visual arts major.  She has twice been named to the PBC Presidential Honor Roll and was named to the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll in 2010.

Legg was a standout performer at North Canton High School.

Mitchell, a 6-0 outside hitter from Farragut, Tenn., started 29 matches this past season and appeared in all 31 contests.  She was third on the team with 208 kills, fourth in attack percentage (.185), and third with 62 total blocks.  She also registered 121 digs, 10 service aces and 39 assists.

Mitchell owns a 3.70 grade point average as a biology major.  She has been named twice to both the PBC Presidential and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor rolls. Mitchell also received a 2010 ADA Academic Achievement Award.  She is serving her third year on FMU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Mitchell is a product of Farragut High School, where she was a KIL and District 4-AAA Player of the Year award winner.
Drewry, a 5-10 outside hitter and part-time setter, is a native of Richmond, Va., and a product of Mills E. Godwin High School.

This past season, Drewry played in all 31 matches and tallied 99 kills, 262 digs (third on the team), 122 assists, 26 service aces (tied for third on the squad), and 19 total blocks.

With a 3.53 GPA as a general business major, she has also been named to both the PBC Presidential and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic honor rolls. She is currently serving on the SAAC.

All three Patriots have also assisted with community service projects, including working with the Salvation Army, Florence Humane Society, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  All have also worked with the Florence Juniors Volleyball Club.

Francis Marion finished its 2010 campaign with a 15-16 record.

Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt Conference is home to 29 NCAA Division II National Championships. The PBC includes 13 member institutions in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama.
