Strong Defense keys Mars Hill win over King

MARS HILL, N.C. - Mars Hill held King to less than 30% shooting from the field and used a game-high 15 points and four steals from Tyler Carlson to defeat the Lady Tornado, 62-52, on Thursday inside Stanford Arena. The Lions improve to 6-2. King falls to 2-11.

Taylor Deal added eight points, 12 rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Mars Hill. Brittini Young chipped in 14 points and three steals, while Margaret Harvey scored 10.

Mars Hill led by six points, 16-10, after a fastbreak layup from Young following a King turnover with 11:11 showing on the clock. The Lions held a 31-24 upper hand at halftime.

Mars Hill opened the second half with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. A layup from Jocelyn Williams made the score 41-24 in favor of the Lions with 15:36 left in the game, and Mars Hill led by double digits for the rest of the game.

Jessica Tharpe notched her third double-digit game of the season with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals. Derika Mooney added a dozen points with three assists, four rebounds and five steals.

Mars Hill finished the game 25-68 (36.8%) from the field, while the Lady Tornado was 17-57 (29.8%).

The Lions will head to San Diego, Calif., to participate in the Surf 'N' Slam Tournament on December 29-30. Mars Hill will take on Holy Family on December 29 at 6 p.m. eastern and Assumption on December 30 at 1 p.m. eastern.
