Erskine women rally past St. Andrews

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Freshman Natalie Whitman (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and junior Megan Lee (Chillicothe, Ohio) both recorded double-doubles for St. Andrews Presbyterian College  but Erskine College received a game-high 23 points from junior Elizabeth Tatum (Glennville, Ga.) to rally for a 70-60 Conference Carolinas women’s basketball victory on Saturday afternoon in Harris Court.

The Flying Fleet (2-4 Overall, 1-1 Conf.) dominated the backboards 47-36 en route to their second straight road win in five days. The Lady Knights (0-5, 0-2) remain winless on the early season.

Whitman led the hosts with season-high totals of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Whitman had the hot stroke for the Lady Knights going 5-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the free throw line. Megan Lee cashed in 14 points and handed out a career-high 10 assists. Both Whitman and Lee manufactured their first collegiate double-doubles in a Royal Blue and White uniform.

St. Andrews won the opening tip and dominated play for the first five minutes. Junior Rebecca Bryant (Cincinnati, Ohio) confidently canned a deep three-pointer just 13 seconds into play to ignite a 14-4 run. An old-fashion three-point play by Whitman highlighted the Knights outburst.

Erskine followed with its own 16-2 run over the next six minutes to soar ahead for the rest of the game. A pair of steals that led to two consecutive fast break layups in 10 seconds emphasized the game changing run. The Fleet kept the momentum building an 11-point lead on a Tatum layup before St. Andrews rallied to within four in the final minute on a Megan Lee steal and jumper. Sophomore Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, Ga.) sent the visitors into the locker room up six, 36-30, with a last second offensive rebound and put back. ‘

EC junior Porsha Morgan (Columbus, Ga.) scored eight of her 14 points and dished out five of her team-high eight assists in the first half. SAPC sophomore Kimayah Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) netted all six of her points in the first 20 minutes.

The Flying Fleet backcourt started heating up in the second half making five of their six made three-pointers in the final frame as Erskine held on for the 10-point victory. St. Andrews kept fighting and inched to within one point four times early. A freshman Monique Lee (Chillicothe, Ohio) layup closed the gap to 42-41 but Tatum and freshman Shakeina Smith (Columbia, S.C.) swished back-to-back three pointers that kept Erskine ahead by at least two possessions for the final 13 minutes.

Smith finished with eight points. Freshman Jana Dixon (Conyers, Ga.) yanked down a team-high 11 rebounds as Erskine controlled the backboards by 11. Sophomore Lauren Stewart (Hartwell, Ga.) chipped in four points, four rebounds, and a game-high four steals.

Bryant logged nine points for the hosts and Monique Lee tallied seven. Fulcher corralled nine boards.

SAPC shot 41.2-percent compared to 37.7% by Erskine but the Flying Fleet took 18 more attempts with 25 offensive rebounds.

St. Andrews will have 12 days to prepare for its last game of 2010 when the Lady Knights visit local rival UNC Pembroke on Thursday, December 16 at 6 p.m.
