Two CSC seniors are runners-up at Fort Hays State Open

HAYS, Kan. - Seniors Jimmy Savala at 141 pounds and Sam Udell at heavyweight each finished second for Chadron State College on Saturday at the Fort Hays State Open Tournament in Hays, Kan.

Both of the Eagles won their first four matches to reach the finals.

Several other Chadron State entries also did well at the tournament. For instance, transfer Briston Brenton won five matches and lost two at 165 pounds. Also, Mikah Kadera at 157 and Chris Leak at 197 finished with 3-2 records.

Jake Lords at 149, Trent Zempel at 174 and Jordan Debus at 184 were 2-2 during the tourney.

One of the wins for Debus, a freshman from Mitchell, came when he pinned Charlie Pipher of Western State in the first round. Pipher is the defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference 184-pound champion and the No. 2 ranked wrestler at that weight in NCAA Division II this season.

CSC coach Scott Ritzen said he was pleased with his team’s performance.

“We competed hard and stood up well against the tough competition in the tournament,” Ritzen said.

The field included wrestlers from Division I teams Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and the Air Force Academy along with Division II powers such as the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Kearney, Central Oklahoma and Western State.
