Drury’s Jones Selected GLVC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS – Drury University senior guard Ja’Nell Jones (Chesterfield, Va., Manchester) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Jones paced the Panthers to non-conference victories over Newman and Arkansas-Ft. Smith last week.

In Monday’s 79-56 win over Newman, Jones tallied a game-high 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting and also added six rebounds, six assists and a steal. In addition to shooting 45.5 percent from the field, Jones was 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

She returned on Sunday to lead the Panthers to an 83-82 overtime victory at Arkansas-Ft. Smith. Jones canned a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to play in overtime to lift Drury to the win. She finished with a game-high 28 points and scored nine of Drury’s 11 points in the overtime session.

In the win, Jones was 9-of-18 from the field, 4-of-7 from the three-point line and 6-of-8 from the free throw line. She also added six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

On the season, Jones is averaging 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. She is third in the GLVC in scoring average, assists per game and steals per game, while averaging a league-high 37.9 minutes played per contest.

Drury (6-4, 2-0 GLVC) has reeled off five straight victories and will now have an extended break before visiting Rockhurst on Jan. 2.

Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Jalissa Chatlos, Lewis’ Jenny Turpel, Maryville’s Kristy Frey, Northern Kentucky’s Casse Mogan, Quincy’s Courtney Shuman and Rockhurst’s Chrissy Sarcone.
