Bentley Men Finish Third in Northeast-10 Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Bentley University men’s swimming team had a slim lead after the second of three sessions in the Northeast-10 Invitational, but its bid to repeat as invitational champion was derailed as the Falcons finished third in a closely contested five-team meet that concluded Sunday at the Dana Center pool.

Bentley, with a score of 470 points, finished behind champion Pace University (515) and runner-up Southern Connecticut State (507). The College of Saint Rose was fourth with 436, and St. Michael’s College followed with 220. The top three were separated by a total of five points entering the final session.

Bentley’s only win of the meet’s second day came in the 200 medley relay with sophomore George Go (Manila, Philippines), freshman Philip Chan (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS), senior Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS) and freshman Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) posting a time of 1:39.78.

Ouellette, Chan and senior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) had Bentley’s top individual finishes with each recording a second. Ouellette was number two in the 100 butterfly (53.96), Chan was the runner-up in the 100 backstroke (1:03.44) and Walsh placed second in the three-meter diving (202.20). Sylvia, Chan and Ouellette also combined with sophomore Mike Simoneau (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) for a second in the 400 free relay (3:17.66).

Thirds were registered by Ouellette in the 100 freestyle (49.11) and sophomore Mike Culkin (Avon, Conn./Avon HS) in the 200 butterfly (2:08.21).

Go was fourth in both the 100 fly (55.68) and the 100 backstroke (57.08), and sophomore Tyler Champagne (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) had a similar finish in the 500 free (5:02.73). Bentley’s other fourth was recorded by the quartet of Champagne, Culkin, senior Chris Horan (Hanover/Boston College HS) and Ouellette in the 800 free relay (7:40.12).

Bentley will conclude the 2010 portion of its schedule Saturday with a triangular at Norwich University with Regis College.
