Honolulu, HI (12/5/10) – In a non-conference game between PacWest schools, the HPU women’s basketball team topped UH-Hilo, 62-51. HPU improves to 3-3 while the Lady Vulcans drop to 2-4 on the season. The game was played at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
Jazzmin Awa-Williams and Paris Gravely each scored a game-high 16 points for HPU, as the Lady Sea Warriors improved their winning streak over UH-Hilo to eight games. Mana Hopkins posted nine points, five rebounds, and two blocks, and Gravely added a team-high seven rebounds and five steals.
Hillary Hurley and Kristy Imai each scored 11 points to lead UH-Hilo.
The Sea Warriors trailed the entire first half and did not take their first lead until 8:05 remaining in the game. An Awa-Williams bucket sparked a 14-1 run as HPU opened a sizeable lead and paced to the victory.
UH-Hilo opened the game on a 9-2 run as nearly six minutes elapsed before HPU scored its first basket. The Sea Warriors rallied to cut the lead to 9-8 on a pair of Taiyande Huskey (8 pts) free throws, but UH-Hilo extended the lead for a 26-20 advantage at halftime.
HPU next takes the court at the Malika Sports Hoop ‘N Surf Classic. The Sea Warriors first take on the University of Charleston on Wednesday, December 15. Start time at the Kilauea Rec Center is set for 3:00 p.m.
