WINONA, MN – Winona State (17-3-1) defeated Minnesota Duluth ( 12-6-2) 3-0 in the 2010 NSIC/U.S. Bank Women's Soccer Tournament today at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Winona, Minn. The Warriors earns an Automatic Bid to the NCAA Central Regional Tournament.
The Warriors claimed their sixth NSIC Tournament championship with a 3-0 victory over Minnesota Duluth at Verizon Wireless Stadium in Winona, getting all three of their scores in the second half.
The Warriors now have six NSIC Tournament titles and their first since 2005. Their six championships are the most in conference history, as are their ten conference regular season titles.
After a scoreless first period, Winona State opened up the contest with three second half goals in the final 28 minutes.
Melissa Sellier put WSU on the board first, taking a centering pass from Jennifer Deroo on the left side of the field and putting the ball in the net. Ten minutes later Sarah Colleran headed in a pass from Katy Soliday to put WSU up 2-0.
The Warriors added one more goal, with Samantha Fegen getting her first score of the season after a pass from Sellier.
Goalkeeper Anna Belpedio made four saves and kept Minnesota Duluth off the scoreboard. She also shutout Minnesota State in the semifinals and was named MVP of the all-tournament team. Deroo, Rowland, Sturdivant, Sellier and Colleran were also named to the all-tournament squad.
The win gives Winona State an automatic bid into the NCAA Regional Tournament which will be played next weekend. Tournament pairings and locations will be announced Monday.
