Malavassi, Cruz Mejia to Compete for Costa Rica Against USA
CANCUN – Two University of West Florida women’s soccer players will represent their home nation of Costa Rica on Monday night in a World Cup Qualifying match against the United States. Sophomore Monica Malavassi and redshirt freshman Danielle Cruz Mejia will take the field as Costa Rica tries to stay in the hunt for a World Cup berth in a match that will be televised by ESPN2 beginning at 5 pm CT.
Costa Rica and the USA will battle for third place in the CONCACAF region’s World Cup qualifying tournament. The match will be held at Estadio Quintana Roo in Cancun, Mexico. The winner will face Italy in a two-leg home-and-away series for the last of 16 berths to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The first leg of the playoff will take place on November 20, and the second leg will be held on November 27.
The loser of tonight’s match, however, is eliminated from World Cup consideration.
Canada and Mexico will face off later in the evening for the tournament championship, although both teams have already clinched World Cup births by virtue of their championship game participation.
Cruz Mejia has played in four of Costa Rica’s six qualifiers so far, while Malavassi has played in three. Neither player has scored, although Cruz Mejia has picked up three yellow cards. The Costa Rica team is 4-2 in the tournament but has dropped their last two matches by 4-0 scores.
One of those losses was to the USA squad on November 1 in Cancun. Malavassi started the match and was subbed out in the 79th minute. The USA led just 1-0 at the half before pulling away in the second period.
Neither player played for West Florida at last weekend’s Gulf South Conference Tournament, which the Argonauts captured on Sunday with a penalty kick victory over North Alabama. Cruz Mejia, a redshirt, has not suited up for UWF this season, while Malavassi is third on the team with eight goals.
