Ammo’s Army, led by student assistant coaches Jamie Ammons and Paul Bordon, took the first contest Friday night, edging the MoCats 8-5. The Army pounded out 13 hits, led by All-American Shawn Ward’s (Martinez, Ga.) 3-for-4 effort, scoring three times.
Junior outfielder Patrick Daugherty (Kennesaw, Ga.) had a full stat line of 2-for-5, two runs, an RBI and a pair of stolen bases. Sophomore outfielder John Welborn (Locust Grove, Ga.) got surprising production out of the nine-slot, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base, a double and an RBI.
Picking up the victory was senior righty Eric Pettepher (Gordon, Ga.), surrendering just two hits while walking five and fanning four in 6 1/3 innings. Junior righty Blake Snyder (Lawrenceville, Ga.) recorded five outs for the save.
Saturday’s game was a 10-9 thriller, as the MoCats scored five runs in the ninth to take the win. The Army handed over the game with two walks, a hit-batsman and two errors in the final frame. The MoCat victory was recorded by Tanner Moore (Thomasville, Ga.), going five innings with four earned runs and five strikeouts.
Infielder Travis Echols (Suwanee, Ga.) powered the offense with a 3-for-4 day, ripping a double and scoring twice while driving in one. All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) catcher Richard Pirkle (Norcross, Ga.) knocked in the game-winning run with a two-out single in the ninth. For the Army, Daugherty again impressed, going 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and two swipes.
In another tight contest, the MoCats got a 2-1 advantage with a 5-4 victory. Tied 3-3 thru 5, the MoCats took the lead 4-3 in sixth, then surrendered it back to the Army at 4-4 in the top of seventh. The ‘Cats took control for good in the bottom of the seventh after freshman Cal Milano’s (Phoenixville, Pa.) RBI groundout scored Echols.
The MoCats were led by sophomore Cody Maas (Alpharetta, Ga.) going 3-for-5 adding two RBI. Chris George (Woodstock, Ga.) picked up the win going seven innings, scattering seven hits for only two earned runs. Reliever Connor Battle (Johns Creek, Ga.) worked out of an eighth inning jam and left the save to freshman Matthew Robinson (Hull, Ga.), who after giving up three hits in the ninth, stranded the bases loaded by striking out the final two batters to shut the door.
The Army’s 1-2 punch at the top of the order had another good day, as Daugherty went 2-of-3, scoring twice, walking twice and stealing two more bases. Junior Jim Moreland (Suwanee, Ga.) also contributed a 3-for-5 day behind lead-off hitter Daugherty, recording two RBI and a triple.
Action continues Friday, Nov. 12 at 5 p.m.
