Wingate's Odell Turner is SAC Player of the Week

Rock Hill, S.C.----Wingate University freshman forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named the South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday. Turner earns the honor for the first time this season and the second time in his career.

Turner poured in a career-high 30 points to lead the Bulldogs past Francis Marion University 96-84 in the championship game of the 2010 OrthoCarolina Classic in Cuddy Arena Saturday. With two victories in the 2010 OrthoCarolina Classic, Wingate improves to 3-2 overall.
           
Turner was nearly perfect Saturday afternoon, hitting 11-of-12 shots from the field to go along with eight-of-11 shooting from the free throw line. The 2009-10 SAC Freshman of the Year added nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals and two assists. Against Coker, Turner had 11 points in only 16 minutes of action as the Bulldogs prevailed 71-58 Friday afternoon.
           
On the season, Turner is averaging team-best totals of 16.0 points per game and 8.8 rebounds per game. During his freshman season, Turner led the Bulldogs with 12.1 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game.
           
Wingate has two home games this week. The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m. Wingate entertains Lincoln Memorial University to open SAC play Saturday at 4 p.m.
