Wieller Leads Bloomsburg University Women's Basketball To Win

PHILADELPHIA—Dana Wieller (Bethlehem, Liberty) tied her career-high with 29 points to lead the Bloomsburg University women’s basketball team to a 69-62 win over the University of the Sciences on Tuesday night.

The Huskies got off to a slow start in the game and trailed 13-5 after six minutes of action. Bloomsburg, though, used an 11-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Wieller to take a 16-15 lead with 11:38 to go in the half. After the teams traded leads, Bloomsburg went on top for good, 23-22, on a jumper by Catherine Noack (Bethlehem, Liberty) with 8:44 to go in the half. The Huskies then closed out the half with a 13-7 run to lead 36-29 at the break.

In the second half after a three-pointer by USCI’s Alyssa Hamm pulled the home team to within 39-34, the Huskies answered with three-pointers from Hannah Geedey (Lewistown, Lewistown) and Kelsey Gallagher (East Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg South) and a free throw from Wieller to go up by 12 points at 46-34.

The Devils would rally and close the gap back to one point on two occasions using a 14-2 run to make it a 51-50 game with 9:25 to play. But Wieller, Courtney Nyce (Schwenksville, Perkiomen Valley) and Lauren Ellis (Bangor, Bangor) hit consecutive shots to make it a 57-50 lead for the Huskies with 6:01 to go.

USCI responded and closed back to within two points at 58-56, but the Wielle and Alyssa Flanagan (Freeland, Hazleton Area) hit back to back three’s pushing the lead back to eight points, 64-56, with 3:22 to go. The closest the Devils got the rest of the way was four points as Bloomsburg hit four of five from the foul line in final minute to seal the win.

Wieller finished with 29 points with Gallagher adding 13 points for the Huskies, now 3-0. Caitlin Shaw scored a game-high 34 points.

The Huskies host Nyack College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
