PIKE CREEK, Del. – Five Lightning scorers reached double figures as the Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team rebounded from a season-opening loss to defeat Shippensburg University in decisive fashion, 84-71 on Mon. night at the Joseph West Jones Center.
Senior guard/forward Sam McDuffie came up just one point shy of reaching the 1,000-point plateau when he missed one of his two free-throw attempts late in the second half. He was 8-for-10 from the line for the night en-route to a 17 point night. He also dished out a game-high five assists and came up with a game-high three steals.
Senior forward Terrence Parkes led the Lightning with game-highs of 22 points and eight rebounds. Parkes was 8-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-5 from three-point range.
Senior point guard Azeez Ellegood (12 points, three assists), graduate student forward Rich Flemming (10 points, seven rebounds, two blocks) and freshman A.J. Picard (10 points) were the other three double-figure Lightning scorers.
The Lightning (1-1) outrebounded Shippensburg 38-29 and converted 21 second-chance points to the Red Raiders’ six. They also outshot Shippensburg (0-1) 78.6 percent to 45.8 percent from the free-throw line for the night.
GBC trailed only once the whole night when Shippensburg opened up a 6-3 advantage early in what started out as a three-point shooting fest. The first five made baskets of the night were all from behind the arc with McDuffie, Ellegood and Parkes all connecting from long range for GBC and Jordan Stasyszyn draining two.
Leading 34-26 at the break, Goldey-Beacom shut the door on Shippensburg in the second half by outscoring the Red Raiders 23-7 over the first seven minutes of the half, capped by a Parkes three to open up a commanding 57-33 lead.
The margin widened to 75-48 at the 5:40 mark before Shippensburg ended the contest with a 14-3 spurt to close the gap. Stasyszyn and Lamar Jackson (3-for-4 from three-point distance) paced the Red Raiders with 16 points apiece in the team’s season opener.
The Lightning’s win was the first in four tries for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team against a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponent.
