ATLANTA, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team (1-1) picked up its first win under head coach Mechan Vanderpool in an impressive 88-59 victory over Clark Atlanta University (0-1). The Falcons shot 54.1 percent as a team and held CAU to just 34.5 percent shooting including 19.2 percent in the first half. Senior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds. She shot 58.3 percent from the field and was 3-for-4 from the free throw line.
Junior Taylor Welch (Salem, Ill./Salem Community) scored 15 points off of five three pointers as she was 5-for-7 from long range. Junior Tiffany McClure (Montgomery, Ala./G.W. Carver) added 12 points and six boards while hitting 5-of-8 from the floor. The final Falcon in double-figures was junior Shavonne Seymore (Hartsville, S.C./Hartsville) who had 11 points off 4-of-7 shooting. Senior Tiaren Young (Forestdale, Ala./Minor) contributed eight points and eight rebounds while junior Davia Harris (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway) added eight boards. Senior Jessica Collins (Jackson, Miss./Callaway) dished out a team-high seven assists.
UM opened the game with a 9-1 run and never looked back. The Falcons never trailed in the game and were dominate in the first half. Up 19-8 with 10:46 left in the first the Falcons went on a 16-2 run to blow open the game and give themselves a 25-point lead. The run was punctuated by a jumper from senior Kris Seigenthaler (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel). UM continued to build its lead and eventuially ended the half up 48-19.
Welch opened up the second half with a three-pointer which gave the Falcons their largest lead of the game. CAU and UM traded baskets the rest of the game with the Falcons eventually winning 88-59.
CAU was led by Conisha Hicks who had 21 points while Jasmine Alston added 10.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, Nov. 19 at 4:00 p.m. as they take on Rollins College at the University of West Florida Classic.
