Northwest sweeps player of the week honors

MARYVILLE, Mo. —Northwest Missouri State senior quarterback Blake Bolles, senior linebacker Willie Horn and sophomore kicker Todd Adolf were named MIAA Football Players of the Week for their performances in the third-ranked Bearcats 17-16 win against sixth-ranked Central Missouri Saturday at Walton Stadium the league office announced Monday.

Bolles passed for 270 yards and ran for a career-high 97 yards in being named co-offensive player of the week along with Missouri Southern wide receiver Ne’Ronte Threatt. Bolles accounted for all 51 yards through the air to set up Northwest’s game-winning field goal. He began the drive on his own 20 with 1:56 remaining and no timeouts.

Bolles also through a 34-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter that gave Northwest a 7-3 lead. His 54-yard run set up a Jordan Simmons 1-yard plunge that cut into Central Missouri’s lead and made it 16-14 early in the fourth quarter.

Horn led Northwest with 11 tackles in earning defensive player of the week honors. Central Missouri entered as the sixth-highest scoring team in the nation, but mustered just one touchdown and 16 points against Northwest.

Horn had one stop behind the line-of-scrimmage and had one of 11 Northwest quarterback hurries. Central Missouri had six red-zone opportunities Saturday, scored one touchdown, kicked three field goals and came away with no points twice.

Adolf, the league’s special team’s player of the week, scrambled onto the field as the clock wound down and kicked a game-winning, 45-yard field goal as time expired to clinch the program’s fifth consecutive MIAA title. Dane Wardenburg snapped the ball with two seconds left and Trevor Adams made the hold for Adolf who established a new career long in terms of distance. Adolf also sent three kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

Northwest won its 24th MIAA title and stands two behind the conference’s record held by Truman. The Bearcats and win the title outright with a win against Pittsburg State Saturday in the Fall Classic at Arrowhead Stadium IX. Kickoff from Kansas City is 2 p.m.
