No. 22 Merrimack Ousted in NE-10 Semis by Franklin Pierce, 4-2

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The No. 22 Merrimack women’s soccer team dropped its Northeast-10 Conference semifinal match 4-2 against Franklin Pierce. The Warriors were seeded No. 2 in the postseason tournament while the Ravens were the third-seeded squad. Merrimack’s overall record fell to 12-5-3 with the loss while Franklin Pierce improved to 14-4-1 on the year.

Merrimack found the back of the net first as Kerri Domohowski (Saugus, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the season. Domohowski pounced on a loose ball inside the six-yard box and slammed it into the bottom right corner of the frame after 2:16 of action.

Franklin Pierce knotted the score at 1-1 less than three minutes later. Kelly Weygand sent a shot towards the goal from 40-yards out. Weygand’s attempt deflected off of a defender and out of the reach of the Warriors’ goalkeeper.

Khara Roman (Orange, Conn.) restored Merrimack’s lead by notching her third score of the 2010 campaign. Lindsey deMont (Littleton, Mass.) served a corner kick to the back post and just before the ball could go out of bounds Ashley Alnwick (Groton, Mass.) kept the play alive with a pass to the center of the net. Roman settled the loose ball and fired it into the roof of the frame to put the Warriors up 2-1 after 10 minutes.

The Ravens would tie the match once again with under five minutes remaining in the period. Jannice Sundqvist and Amanda Pannaro attacked the Merrimack goal on a 2-on-1 break. Sundqvist laid the ball off to Pannaro who slotted it into the net.

In the 67th minute, Franklin Pierce claimed its first lead of the day on Weygand’s second score of the match. Weygand sent a ball into the box and it sneaked through traffic and found its way into the goal to put the visitors up 3-2.

The Ravens added an insurance goal with just over two minutes left in the contest. Sundqvist slid a ball to Shona Franklin inside the penalty area. Franklin placed the ball inside the right post for her ninth score of the year.

The third-seed in the tournament, Franklin Pierce owned a 17-8 margin in shots while the two squads each earned four corner kicks in the game.

Kiley Horne (Scituate, Mass.) turned aside four shots between the sticks for Merrimack. Jocelyn Leon made three saves for the Ravens in the win.

“The weather definitely played a factor in the match. I was proud of the effort put forth by our team today,” said head coach Gabe Mejail. “We came out strong with two quick goals to put the pressure on them. We had to send more players forward to try and score but that exposed our defense and lead to the fourth goal.”

Merrimack will await the NCAA selection show to learn of their fate. The selection show is scheduled for November 8.
