Five Miners named academic all-district; Shockley chosen to first team

ROLLA, Mo. - Missouri S&T senior wide receiver Chad Shockley has earned a number of accolades during the 2010 season for his play on the field - and now has earned an honor for his work in the classroom as he has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District first team for District 7.

As a first team selection, Shockley will be eligible for academic All-America honors when that team is released later this fall. He is one of five Miners to be selected at the district level, as teammates Collin Bahr, Brian Peterson, Edwin Scott and Joe Ridpath also made the all-district squad.

Shockley, a history major at Missouri S&T, is among the national leader in receiving and all-purpose yards during the 2010 season. With two games remaining, he has 68 receptions for 1,001 yards - making him just the third player in Miner history to accumulate at least 1,000 yards in catches during a season - with a team-high 10 touchdowns.

While ranking in the top 20 nationally in receptions and yards, Shockley also has 1,286 all-purpose yards on the season - with a season-high of 287 in last week's game against Urbana - and is in a position to break the S&T single season marks for catches and receiving yards. He is also a two-time recipient of the Great Lakes Football Conference's "Player of the Week" award.

Bahr, who also majors in history at S&T, was a second-team selection on the offensive line while Peterson, a chemical engineering major, was named to the third team on that unit. Scott, one of the members of the third team in the secondary, has 33 tackles and an interception during the 2010 season, while Ridpath has made 16 tackles from his defensive line position.

Scott is majoring in economics at Missouri S&T, while Ridpath is majoring in civil engineering.

Missouri S&T will play Saturday against Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind.
