CHADRON – The University of Mary Marauders led by just 34-29 at halftime, but outscored the short-handed Chadron State Eagles 37-15 in the second half while posting a 71-44 non-conference victory in a women’s basketball game in Chadron on Monday night.

The North Dakota team is now 2-0, while the game was the season opener for Chadron State.

The Eagles were forced to play without All-American guard Kaitlin Petri, because of a leg injury.

Even though Mary jumped out to a 10-0 lead, the young Chadron State team closed the gap to 29-27 with 3:20 left before halftime, but could not get the shots to drop in the second half.

CSC shot 38.5 percent (10-26) from the field in the opening half, but hit just 17 percent (5-29) in the second half. The Eagles also struggled at the free throw line in the second half, making only three of 12 shots.

Mary, which sank its first five 3-point attempts, shot 39.4 percent from the field in the first half and 36.1 percent in the second half. Four Mauraders scored in double figures, led by Shaunna Knife with13. Ali Collins, McKenzie Foster and Rachel Zillmer all added 11.

Chadron was paced  by Kelsey Scott with 11 points. Kattie Ranta added nine points, all in the first half, and Marla Munsen chipped in four more.

Chadron coach Tim Connealy said he doesn’t know how long Petri will be sidelined, but noted that the ailment can be serious and she will not play until she receives 100 percent clearance from doctors.

The Eagles will be at home against Northern State of Aberdeen, S.D., next Monday night.
