CHADRON – Four of Black Hills State’s five starters finished in double figures and Craig Von Allman added 12 more off the bench to lift the Yellow Jackets to a 76-67 victory over Chadron State in the Eagles’ home opener Monday evening at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Luke Enos led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points, Cain Atkinson had 15, Will John Johnson scored 12 and hauled in 11 rebounds and Clay Pottorff added 10 more as Black Hills improved to 6-1 on the season.

Chadron State’s Kevin McClelland finished with a game-high 18 points and Moala Tautuaa scored 13 and grabbed five rebounds but the Eagles were unable to gain enough momentum to put Black Hills State away. A big reason for that was the Jackets’ free throw shooting, especially in the second half when they went 10-for-11. Black Hills State finished the game making 23 of 28 from the foul line, compared to just nine of 12 for CSC.

The Eagles started the game out well and opened with a 15-5 scoring burst after Sammy Hines banked in a jumper. The Yellow Jackets continued to chip away, though, and took their first lead of the half at 29-28 when Von Allman sank a 3-pointer with three minutes, 15 seconds remaining.

The Yellow Jackets led the remainder of the first half and pushed their advantage to 52-45 with 13 minutes to play, but the Eagles came storming back on a 12-0 scoring run fueled by two long 3-pointers from Jordan Lisco and McClelland.

However, Chadron State was unable to maintain its lead and Black Hills State went up for keeps at 65-63 after Travis Haney drained a 3-pointer and two free throws on the Jackets’ next possession with four minutes to go.

For the game, Chadron State hit 26 of 64 from the field (40.6 percent), while Black Hills State made 24 of 55 (43.6 percent). Both teams struggled from long range as Chadron State hit just six of 24 and Black Hills State five of 16.

The Eagles will play at the University of Mary Saturday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D.
