Columbus State Men’s Basketball Falls in Season Opener to Alabama-Huntsville

Huntsville, AL – Josh Magette scored a game-high 26 points leading Alabama-Huntsville to a 96-66 non-conference win over Columbus State at Spragins Hall Monday night.  The Chargers improve to 3-0 while CSU drops its season opener.

The Cougars were unable to match the offensive firepower of UAH as they led from the start of the contest.  Alabama-Huntsvielle shot 59% for the night including a blistering 73% in the first half which included seven three-pointers.  Columbus State was able to shoot 40% from the floor in the first half but only hit two treys.  Magette was a perfect 8-for-8 in the first half, four of those made shots from downtown en route to scoring 20 points in the first 20 minutes of play.

CSU was able to show flashes in the second half as they were only outscored by two points, 38-36in this frame.  Andrew Houts led the scoring for the Cougars in the second half, scoring nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range.  Both teams had a large run in them during the second half although Columbus State’s was more impressive as they went on a 20-6 run in a five-minute spurt.  Anthony Smith capped off the run with a three-pointer.

Isaac Joyner paced the Cougars offense with 14 points (5-of-11) followed by Darius Mcknight’s near double-double night of 12 points (5-of-6) and a game-high eight rebounds.  Columbus State shot 41% in the contest but was just 12-for-27 (44%) from the free thrown line.

Magette led five different UAH players in double-figures including Zane Campbell (15 pts), Jamie Smith (12 pts), Xavier Baldwin (10 pts) and Tyler Hanbuck (10 pts).  Josh Yost grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Magette had a game-high eight assists.  For the contest, they shot 45% from three-point range (10-of-22) and hit 12-of-18 free throws.

Columbus State will have a week off before returning to the hardwood when it hosts Carver-Bible in their home opener at the Lumpkin Center on Monday, November 22.  The Cougars defeated C-B 95-61 a year ago.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
