FSU Falls in Semifinal Round of CIAA Tournament

Chowan advances after straight-set victory

HAMPTON, VA – Fayetteville State’s run of CIAA Championship appearances will end at three.

After stunning Northern Division champion Elizabeth City State in the late match on Friday night to advance to the CIAA Volleyball Tournament semifinals following a 3-0 record in pool play, the Lady Broncos were defeated in straight sets at the hand of Chowan on Saturday evening.

Chowan won by the scores of 25-21, 25-14 and 245-15 to advance to Sunday’s final at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. Fayetteville State (16-8) had played in the last three tournament finals, winning the CIAA title in 2007 before finishing as the league runner-up in each of the last two seasons.

The Lady Broncos’ two senior three-time All-CIAA First Team selections Samantha Meeks (Sr., Laurinburg, NC) and Achari Mainor (Sr., Antioch, CA) played their final matches for Fayetteville State. Meeks finished with five kills and three digs while Mainor had a team-high 13 assists.

Octavia Wynn (So., Hope Mills) had a team-high 14 kills for the Lady Broncos.

Victoria Lewis led all players with 16 kills and 11 digs for Chowan while Callie Armistead had 26 assists.
