Final Minute Surge Lifts Assumption Over New Haven Women's Basketball

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game 77-72 Tuesday night at Assumption College. With a lead in the closing two minutes, the Chargers struggled in the final minute and suffered their second conference loss of the season. New Haven falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10, while the Greyhound improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The opening half was back-and-forth on Tuesday night. Scoring from Dominique Stellmacher and Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty put the Chargers quickly ahead by a score of 9-2. New Haven held on to a lead for the next 10 minutes, but the Greyhounds went on a 15-0 over the course of three minutes to take a 10-point lead, 29-19. The Chargers went on a 14-0 run to close the half and regain the lead in the final minute. Ithier-Vicenty connected on a layup with five-seconds left to give UNH a 38-34 lead at the break.

UNH shot 48.4 percent from the floor in the first half, while the Greyhounds connected on over 50 percent of their shots. Assumption out-rebounded the Chargers 15-14 in the first half as well.

Stellmacher hit a three-pointer right out of halftime to give the Chargers an early seven-point lead, 41-34. New Haven would maintain its lead and lead by as many as 14 points with 10:13 left in the second half. Assumption answered with a 13-0 run, cutting the Chargers lead to 62-61 with 5:55 remaining. UNH held on to the lead and led by six points, 72-66, with 2:41 left. Assumption would then take control of the game in the final minutes. The Greyhounds scored the game's final 11 points to seal the victory, while the Chargers turned the ball over three times and missed three shots in the final two minutes.

Assumption finished the game shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, while New Haven made 44.6 percent of its shots. The Greyhounds also went 91.7 percent from the foul line, compared to 71.4 percent for the Chargers. UNH was out-rebounded 37-29 in the game as well.

Stellmacher led the Chargers with 21 points. The senior added seven rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Ithier-Vicenty and Anh-Dao Tran each scored double-digits with 15 and 13, respectively. Tran also dished out five assists in the game.
