Ferris State at Lewis Women's Basketball game notes

SERIES HISTORY: Lewis is 5-5 all-time against Ferris State.

THE LAST TIME WE MET: The Flyers dropped a 74-66 decision last season at Ferris State on Nov. 24, 2009. Kady Currin had 14 points in the contest. Lewis came back from a five-point halftime deficit to take the lead in the second, but in the end the Bulldogs pulled away thanks to a 12-0 run with seven minutes left.

LAST TIME OUT: Lewis earned a 77-64 non-conference victory over Wayne State at Neil Carey Arena on Friday. Jenny Turpel led all scorers with 20 points, while classmate Carol Kruckman racked up a career-high 14 points and tied her career-best with six rebounds. Labrenthia Murdock made an immediate impact off the bench with 13 points and seven rebounds. Lewis held a lead as large as 25 in the contest.

40 FROM THE BENCH: The Lewis bench outscored the Flyers' starting five 40-to-37 in the Flyers' 77-64 victory over Wayne State last Friday.

A CAREER-BEST: Kady Currin's five steals against Wayne State was a career-high for the senior.

THEY'RE FREE FOR A REASON: Lewis leads the conference in free throw percentage, making 56-of-65 attempts (86.2 percent). The Flyers sunk their first 13 attempts against Wayne State on Friday.

ON FIRE!: The Flyers shot 54.9 percent from the floor against Wayne State on Friday. That's the best Lewis shot in a contest since Dec. 6, 2008 at Missouri-St. Louis (62.7 percent).

FLYING HOME: First-year assistant coach Cliff Evans is a former member of the Lewis men's basketball team, earning All-GLVC Second Team honors in 1985. Evans is one of two former Flyers on the Lewis bench. Tracy Summers played for the Flyers from 2000-04.

DON'T PLAN A VACATION IN JANUARY: Of Lewis' nine home GLVC games this season, seven are in the month of January. The schedule includes a four games in eight days stretch on Jan. 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th.

NO OT NEEDED: Lewis didn't play a single overtime game last season.

THEY CALL HER MONEY: Kelly Monaco, known as Money to her teammates, ranks sixth all-time in career 3-pointers with 141. She needs nine to pass Darcee Schmidt (2003-07) for fifth place.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, LAKESHORE: Lewis will play two games on Lakeshore Public Television this season. The first contest will be on Saturday, Jan. 8 against Quincy at 5:30. The second will be on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 against Drury. Lewis defeated Missouri-St. Louis at Southern Indiana on Lakeshore last season.

JT's CAREER POINTS: Jenny Turpel's 1,415 points ranks 7th all-time in Lewis history. Another 500-point season would put her 2nd all-time in Lewis history. First up though is 6th place Mary Niego, who totaled 1,563 from 1980-83.

JT's CAREER BLOCKS: Jenny Turpel's 91 blocks ranks fifth all-time in Lewis history. She is four short of passing Jackie Wayne (1987-91) for fourth place. For her career, Turpel is averaging exactly one block a game.

NEXT UP: Lewis will travel to Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday to play in the UIndy Classic. Lewis will face Tusculum on Friday and Marygrove on Saturday. Tusculum is 0-3 on the season, dropping games to Lander, USC Aiken and Clayton State. Marygrove is an NAIA school with a 1-4 record.
