Day, Littig and McCarthy Earn Northeast-10 Weekly Honors

River Hawk Trio Earns Accolades After NE-10 Tournament Victory

LOWELL (Nov. 22, 2010) – Senior midfielder Liz Day (North Andover, Mass.) was recognized as the Northeast-10 Player of the Week for earning NE-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player accolades this weekend.  The conference also honored junior defender Kayla Littig (Carver, Mass.) as the Defensive Player of the Week and freshman midfielder Rachel McCarthy (Reading, Mass.) earned Rookie of the Week honors.  The trio helped lift the No. 2 UMass Lowell field hockey team to the 2010 NE-10 Tournament Championship.

Day helped backbone the River Hawk defense and jumpstart the offense in Friday’s 4-2 win over Adelphi and Saturday’s 6-1 Championship victory over Stonehill, earning her the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award.

Day, a criminal justice major, is the daughter of Cathy and Stephen Day of North Andover, Mass.
Littig, a stellar defender, helped the River Hawks hold Stonehill to just one shot on Saturday and outcorner their opponents 21-8 on the weekend.  She also scored her first goal of the season on Saturday and was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Littig is a business administration major and is the daughter of Helen and Kevin Littig of Carver, Mass.
McCarthy, a freshman midfielder, recorded three goals and an assist for seven points during her first NE-10 Tournament.  She converted on a penalty stroke and scored the game-winner on Friday and assisted on the game-winning goal in Saturday’s game, as well.

McCarthy, a criminal justice major, is the daughter of Michele and Paul McCarthy of Reading, Mass.
The River Hawks, who boast an unblemished 22-0 record earned the top seed in the North Region for the NCAA Tournament and a first-round bye.  They await Tuesday’s Quarterfinal game between No. 5 Stonehill and No. 7 American International to determine their Semifinal opponent for Dec. 2 at 1:00 p.m. at the University of Louisville’s Tragar Stadium as part of the 2010 Fall Championships Festival.
