VALDOSTA, Ga. - Two Valdosta State football players have been named to the ESPN Academic All-Region team, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Blazer starting center Jake Thomas (Suwanee, Ga., North Gwinnett) earned the honor as he currently carries a 3.89 grade point average as a Business Management major. Thomas has started all eight VSU games this year and has registered 37 knockdown blocks while grading out at 76 percent on the season.
Senior strong safety Dudley Spence (Madison, Ga., Morgan County) also earned first team All-Region honors as he currently carries a 3.30 GPA as a Business Management major. Spence is currently third on the VSU squad with 57 tackles on the year. Spence has registered 1.5 tackles for loss on the season and has forced a team-high three fumbles. Additionally he has one interception and has broken up four passes.
In order to earn All-Region honors, a player must carry a minimum of a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and be a sophomore both academically and athletically. First-team All-Region winners, such as Thomas and Spence, automatically advance to the All-America ballot, which will be voted on later in November.
