UDC Defeats Bridgewater, Falls to St. Mary’s at Tournament

St. Mary's MD: The University of the District of Columbia Firebirds Women's Volleyball Team won their first match then lost a closely played one tonight at the St. Mary's College Seahawk Invitational Tournament in St. Mary's, Maryland. Senior middle hitter Karen Trevino (Political Science-Anthony, NM) posted a double of 13 kills and 12 digs to lead the Firebirds to a, 3-0, win over the Bridgewater College Eagles in their first match of the Tournament.

Senior outside hitter Grace DeMichelis (Political Science-Aurora, CO) also tallied a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling up 18 digs. Set scores were 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.

In their second match of the night, UDC fell to St. Mary's College, 3-1, in a closely fought contest. The Firebirds forced a 4th set after losing the first 13-25, and then wining the second 25-23. They then lost a hard fought third set, 21-25, and the fourth 20-25.

Trevino, again, provided the leadership as she posted her second double-double of the night with 10 kills and 18 digs. Three Firebirds, each, made 7 kills to follow the leader.  Middle hitter Ashley Jefferson (Accounting-Manvel,TX) tallied 7 kills, 22 digs, sophomore outside hitter Vanessa Garley (Business-Rio Rancho, NM) 7 kills and 12 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Grace Perilli 7 kills, 15 digs.

The Firebirds improved their record to 19-6 with these two contests. They next face Salisbury State University at 1 p.m., on Saturday October 30, followed by Virginia Wesleyan College at 3p.m.
