In this inaugural season for Queens, depth could be the Royals biggest obstacle. While the Royals are winning events, opponents can place more swimmers in each event enabling them to earn more points without winning the race. This proved to be what happened tonight.
After winning 10 of 13 events, the Royals men held the lead heading into the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. The race marks the first time the Queens swam the relay this season and the combination of Daniel Bowden (Charlotte, N.C., Ardrey Kell), Jeremy Gregory, Austin Hughey (Auburn, Ala.) and Kyle Disney (Raleigh, N.C.) posted a time of 3:12.76, just behind Limestone’s winning time of 3:11.99. The Saints win in the event secured the overall win.
Not featured in the relay was iron-horse of the night Christian Yeatts (Charlotte, N.C.), “Christian was entered in all of the big events for the night and he performed well each time,” said Head Coach Jeff Dugdale.
Yeatts competed in three individual events, one relay and he won each event. After swimming the third leg of the 400-yard medley relay, Yeatts jumped back in the pool two events later to win the 1650-yard by more than eight seconds.
The women’s team opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. Nicole Bearden (Adrian, Mich.), Kelsey Smith (Charlotte, N.C.), Mary Strand (Mooresville, N.C.) and Caitlin Seed (Macedonia, Ohio) posted a time of 4:30.34 for the first recorded time in the event.
Seed continued her strong performance from the opening meet into this dual. In the 100-yard backstroke she placed second with a time of 59.99, just .33 behind Limestone’s winner Renee Pouchet. Seed set a pace out of the reach of the rest of the 50-yard freestyle field, winning with a time of 24.57. The second finisher, Katy Gilbert, was more than two seconds behind with a time of 26.84
Queens has a chance to rebound Saturday, Oct. 30 as they swim in Catawba’s Boo Bash Relays starting at 10am.
