The Griffons came out of the gate taking an early 9-6 lead in the first 15 points. The Bearcats went on a 7-1 run the next eight points claiming the 13-10 lead. The Bearcats continued to play well getting the opening set victory 25-11. SBU hit .321 with 13 kills as Ashley Jurgensmeyer led the way with five kills.
Western also hit well at .225 with 17 kills but had eight errors to the Bearcats four. Sicner led the way with six kills. The Bearcats had four blocks to the Griffons one in the opening set.
Western closed the second set on a 14-10 run claiming the 25-21 victory. Western hit .265 with Tahler Johnston leading the way with seven kills. Stephanie Hattey had five kills in the set as Western evened up the match heading into the break.
Things looked good in set three for Western as they jumped out to the 20-16 lead, but an 8-0 run by the Bearcats sunk the Griffons. SBU would take set three 25-23 taking momentum of the match. The Bearcats used that momentum claiming the 25-21 victory in set four taking the match in four. The Bearcats improve to 9-17 overall and 4-10 in MIAA play.
The Griffons hit .220 in the match with 64 kills. Johnston and Stephanie Hattey finished with 14 and 10 respectively. Hattey also had a good night setting the ball finishing with 29 while Meghan Voelz finished the night with 15 of the Griffons 57 digs.
The Bearcats hit .229 with 16 kills coming from Jurgensmeyer. Brianna Wallace finished with 43 of the Bearcat 47 set assists while Caitlyn Muder had 19 digs.
The Griffons will return to action on Saturday, October 30 hosting the Missouri Southern Lions in the MWSU Fieldhouse. Match time set for 7:00 pm.
