Late Surge Lifts Illini To 75-65 Win Over Lewis Men’s Hoops In Exhibition Opener

Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University men’s basketball team dished out every punch they could manage against No. 13 Illinois in their exhibition opener on Friday (Oct. 29) night, but the Fighting Illini countered and delivered the knockout blow, a 10-2 run over the final 2:26 to earn the 75-65 win over the visiting Flyers at Assembly Hall.

Illinois, who had made just 10 of their firs t 18 free throws, responded in spades, by knocking down 8-of-10 from the charity stripe in the final run to secure the win. Illinois senior center Mike Davis led four Fighting Illini players in double-figures with 15 points. Senior guard Demetri McCamey had 12 points, followed by Jereme Richmond (11 points) and D.J. Richardson (10 points).

Despite the loss, Lewis head men’s basketball coach Scott Trost was encouraged by his team’s performance.

“I thought we competed tonight,” Trost said. “We learned a lot about ourselves tonight, both offensively and defensively.

“We know we have a lot of work to do, but I’m pleased with what we did,” Trost continued. “Illinois is good and very deserving of their preseason recognition and I’m very appreciative that Bruce (Weber) gave us this opportunity.

“These games are really important to not only us, but I think it helps (Illinois) as well.”

Lewis senior guard Dennis Thomas Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) led the Flyers with 13 points and five assists, while backcourt mate Chris McClellan (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) added 12 points. Flyer center Marty Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks in the loss.

The entire contest was a see-saw affair that featured 12 ties and eight lead changes with the final tie coming at the 13:35 mark, as Lewis’ Matt Toth (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) converted a lay-up to even the score at 49.

Illinois responded with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes, as five different Fighting Illini players scored to take a 60-49 lead.

Lewis, however, would not go away quietly, as they went on a 14-5 run, spurred by six points from Strus, over the next 6:51 to narrow the Illini’s lead to 65-63, but the Flyers would come no closer.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday, November 7th, as the Flyers head to Chicago to square off with DePaul for a 6 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
