Gannon Swim Teams set two meet records en route to pair of titles at Westminster Relay Meet

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Gannon swimming and diving teams broke two meet records and cruised to the combined championship at the Westminster (Pa.) Relay Meet Friday evening.

Gannon captured the combined championship with 268 points, out-distancing second-place Edinboro (220) by 48 points. Westminster (Pa.) (194), St. Vincent (Pa.) (110), Chatham (72) and Penn State Altoona (60) completed the six-team field.

Head coach Nate Walter’s squad headlined the six-team women’s field with 144 points. The Lady Knights posted a 40-point margin of victory over Edinboro (104). Westminster (Pa.) (102), Chatham (72), St. Vincent (Pa.) (46) and Penn State Altoona (22) rounded out the team scoring.

Gannon also won the men’s team title with 124 points, narrowly out-gaining Edinboro’s 116 points. Westminster (Pa.) (92), St. Vincent (Pa.) (64) and Penn State Altoona (38) followed.

Both meet records occurred on the women’s side in the 800-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle relay events. Gannon’s 800-yard freestyle team of Ellie Hess (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), Sarah Anderson (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Regina LaRosa (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) was the first to snap a record. The foursome swam the event in eight minutes and 8.73 seconds, breaking the old mark of 8:10.76 set by Westminster in 2000.

The 200-yard freestyle meet record was the next to fall. Jackie Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Anderson, Hess and Bosy set the new standard with a time of one minute and 40.19 seconds. It narrowly nipped the old mark of 1:40.86 set by Edinboro in 2006.

In all, Gannon finished first in 12 events, including six on each side. In addition to the 200-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay titles, the Gannon women’s team added first-place finishes in the 3X100 yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The 3X100 yard butterfly relay team of Liz Clary (Canton, Ohio/Glen Oak), Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Rzymek kicked off the Westminster Relay Meet with a winning time of three minutes and 5.31 seconds.

Familiar faces in Rzymek, Anderson, Hess and Bosy helped Gannon win the 400-yard freestyle relay. The four Lady Knights won the event by five seconds with a time of three minutes and 41.09 seconds.

Gannon also captured two titles in diving events. Diana Rocco (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) won the one-meter event with 40 points while Megan Beresford (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) earned the victory in the three-meter event with 50 points.

On the men’s side, Gannon was the top team in four relays and two diving events. The 3X100 yard breaststroke relay team of Mitchel Meighen (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), James Lilly (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and Jared Griffard (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho/Coeur d’Alene) was the first Gannon male team to raise its arms. The squad produced a winning time of 3:05.73, defeating the next team by almost 10 seconds.

Gannon’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African Collage), Terrance Coughran (Atwater, Calif./Atwater), Meighen and Luke Curtis (Adelaide, South Australia/Blackfriars Priory) was the next male championship squad with a time of seven minutes and 23.97 seconds. It was another easy victory with nearly a seven-second margin of defeat.

The Golden Knights continued their run when the 3X500 yard freestyle relay squad of Lilly, Curtis and Coughran posted a 38-second victory with a time of 15 minutes and 5.46 seconds.

The relay titles concluded with the 400-yard medley IM relay team of Meighen, Brandon Bricarell (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods), Lilly and Griffard. Its time of 3:51.63 was just under four seconds better than the next team.
