ESU Field Hockey Selected for NCAA Division II Playoffs, Plays at Bloomsburg on Tuesday

EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University has been selected to play in the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships for the second straight season and will face a familiar foe, Bloomsburg, in the first round on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in central Pennsylvania.

The Warriors (17-5) will take on Bloomsburg (18-2) for the fourth time this season and the second time in four days after falling 2-1 at Bloomsburg in the PSAC championship game on Saturday. The two teams split their two regular season meetings.

This will mark ESU's sixth appearance in an NCAA field hockey tournament and the third at the Division II level. ESU previously played in the Division II tournament in 2001 and 2009, and the Division III tournament in 1987, 1989 and 1990.

The winner of Tuesday’s first round game will take on Shippensburg (20-1), the top seed in the South Region, in the semifinals on December 2 in Louisville, Kentucky. ESU handed Shippensburg its only loss of the season, 2-1, in the PSAC semifinals last Friday.

In the North Region, UMass-Lowell (22-0) is the only undefeated team in the country and is the top seed. No. 2 Stonehill (15-6) will host No. 3 American International (14-7) in the first round game.

The winner of the North and South regions will meet in the national championship game on Saturday, December 4 at Trager Field on the campus of the University of Louisville. The field hockey championship is being held in conjunction with the NCAA Division II Festival for fall sports championships.

ESU fell to Shippensburg, 3-0, in the first round of last year's NCAA Playoffs. The Warriors reached the national championship game in 2001 and made the Division III semifinals in 1990. All six NCAA tournament appearances have come under head coach Sandy Miller, who is in her 27th season at ESU.
