JEFFERSON CITY, MO., November 13, 2010 - Five players scored in double figures as the University of Missouri-St. Louis women's basketball team defeated Lincoln, 78-63, Saturday afternoon, opening the season 2-0 for the first time since 2005-06.
Junior Caitlyn Moody poured in a game-high 22 points, while senior Kelly Mitchell finished with 15. Junior Normeka Holder added 13, while senior Kelly Carter recorded 11 points, seven assists and five steals. Senior Kelcy Hulbert chipped in 10 points and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Clinging to a 38-36 halftime lead, the Tritons opened things up early in the second half, breaking free from a 43-43 tie three and a half minutes into the second half with seven unanswered points, taking a 50-43 lead on a pair of Allie Hogan free throws with just over 15 minutes remaining. A Moody jumper with 11:50 to play then extended the UMSL lead to 56-46 and the Tritons never looked back.
UMSL shot 44.1 percent from the floor, while Lincoln (1-1) shot 40 percent. The Tritons held the Blue Tigers to just 28 percent in the final 20 minutes after the home team connected on 52 percent in the first half. UMSL also owned a 36-35 rebounding advantage and forced 24 turnovers, picking up 12 steals. The Tritons were able to take advantage of the Lincoln miscues, scoring 35 points on the other end.
UMSL returns to action next Saturday (Nov. 20), traveling to future Great Lakes Valley Conference member McKendree for a 7 p.m. contest.
