Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt junior defensive lineman Josh Yon (Kings Mountain, N.C.) has been awarded the Charlotte Touchdown Club Scholarship, officials announced this week. Yon is a graduate of Kings Mountain High School.
Yon had 33 tackles and four tackles for loss for the South Atlantic Conference champion Bulldogs. For the first time in school history, Wingate (9-3 overall) qualified for the NCAA Division II play-offs. Wingate defeated number 23 Morehouse College 63-41 before falling to number five Albany State University 30-28 in the second round.
In the Morehouse contest, Yon had a season-high seven tackles and one quarterback hurry. He also shared a sack. At Carson-Newman College, he posted five tackles. Yon and his teammates defeated the C-N Eagles 35-33 in overtime, giving Wingate its first-ever triumph over Carson-Newman in Jefferson City.
“Josh Yon was the foundation of our defensive line (this year),” Wingate head coach Joe Reich says. “He is a blue-collar, hard-working player. Josh’s consistency and reliability were benchmarks we came to count on during the season.”
