EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held a holiday party for more than 100 children at Head Start on West 4th Street in East Stroudsburg on Thursday, December 9.
Members of SAAC collected more than $500 from their teammates to use towards purchasing gifts and supplies for the children. More than 60 student-athlete volunteers assisted with the day’s events and more than 20 helped wrap gifts in the week leading up to the party.
“I’m extremely proud of SAAC and the student-athlete volunteers’ efforts on behalf of these children,” said Professor Nancy Jo Greenawalt, ESU’s Academic Coordinator for Athletics and the faculty supervisor of SAAC. “This was one of the best organized events that I have ever seen SAAC undertake. They were wonderful ambassadors for ESU and ESU athletics.”
Activities for the children during the three-hour party included decorating trees and snowmen, making picture frames with popsicle sticks, and making a banner with the hand print and name of each child at Head Start which will be displayed in the school hallway. Pictures were also taken for each child and will be printed by SAAC and given back to Head Start for the children to place in their picture frames.
The Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management Club was also instrumental in providing juice and homemade treats for the children and coffee for the employees of Head Start.
The 2010-11 officers for SAAC are president Bryan Billger (football), vice president Seve Rivers (football), treasurer Bryce Muth (baseball) and secretary Brittany Bissell (lacrosse).
