UNCP Posts Perfect Day In Three Matches At Newberry Duals

NEWBERRY, S.C. – All-American Russell Weakley registered three wins by pin fall, while Timdarius Thurston, Brendon Parker-Risk and Tyquan Easton each posted unblemished days on the mat as well, as 20th-ranked UNCP grabbed wins over a trio of ranked teams en route to completing a perfect day at the Newberry Duals on Sunday in Eleazer Arena.

The Braves (5-0) were near-dominant in posting a 32-6 win over Cumberland (0-6) in Sunday’s opener, but then easily cut through No. 17 Ashland (1-1), 27-12, in their mid-day bout. The Black and Gold would finish off the day by turning away seventh-ranked Findlay (1-2) to stay perfect in five dual meets this season.

Weakley, ranked third among the nation’s wrestlers at 125 pounds, turned in first period pins in each of his first two matches on the day, and then needed just 11 seconds of the second period to defeat eighth-ranked Ben Sergent of Findlay in his final match of the day. Thurston contributed in a big way on the day as well, registering victories by pin and major decision in his bookend matches, while also grabbing a 7-5 decision over eighth-ranked Scott Meyer of Ashland as well.

Tyquan Easton performed admirably as well, defeating Cumberland’s Michael Davis by a 4-2 decision in his Sunday debut, and then pulling out a tight 4-3 decision over eighth-ranked Kyle Kanaga of Ashland. He would conclude his day with a 6-5 win over Findlay’s Chris Andrews. Parker-Risk was convincing in his bookend matches on the day, turning in a 12-1 major decision over Cumberland’s Andrew Shoultz and a 13-1 major decision over Findlay’s Chad Channel, but the newcomer also registered a third-period pin of Ashland’s Daniel Genetin.

UNCP has now won 14 of its last 16 dual matchups dating back to last December and are perfect after the first five dual matches of the season for the first time since the 2002-03 squad opened up its campaign with an 8-0 record. The Black and Gold’s win over Ashland was its first win in five tries against the Eagles, while the Braves also improved to 1-4 all-time against Findlay as well.

The Braves registered wins in 15 of their first 20 individual matchups of the day in slicing through both Cumberland and Ashland, but faced its first stiff challenge of the day against from the Oilers in Sunday’s finale. UNCP used pins from both Weakley and Thurston, as well as a major decision by Parker-Risk, to stake claim to a 19-0 lead after four matches, but Findlay won four of the next five individual matches to get to within five team points, 22-17, heading into the heavyweight match.

The Braves will be back in action again this weekend when they head to Indianapolis to take part in the UIndy-hosted Midwest Classic at Nicoson Hall. The tournament, which will feature 24 teams from Divisions II and III and the NAIA in the field of squads from around the nation, will get underway on Saturday at 11 a.m. EST.
