Punter Kevin Berg and placekicker Michael Ziola were selected to the first team, while offensive lineman Tim Hiett was placed on the second team.
The team is voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) from Super Region 3, consisting of football playing institutions in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Berg, a senior from Longmont, Colo., and the Rocky RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year, is making his second consecutive appearance on the Super Region 3 First Team after also being tabbed in 2009. He set a school record by averaging 43.0 yards per punt in 2010. Fifteen of his 49 punts landed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and 14 of them traveled at least 50 yards. Berg is currently fourth in Division II with his punting average.
Berg also had a stellar season in the Eagles’ secondary, playing at safety. He was third on the team in tackles (58) and led the team with four interceptions and seven pass break-ups, despite missing one game.
Ziola, a redshirt freshman from Columbus, Neb., also had a fine season for the CSC special teams. He tied the school record for most field goals in a season with 18 successful kicks and he was a perfect 39-for-39 in extra points. Ziola led the Eagles in scoring in 2010 and is ranked fourth nationally in field goals made per game.
Hiett, a junior from Arvada, Colo., helped the Eagles’ offense average over 200 yards a game rushing and 29.9 points a game. He started all 11 games this season and was named to the RMAC All-Conference First Team.
Berg and Ziola are now eligible to be selected as a Daktronics’ Division II Football All-American. The announcement for the All-America team is expected on Dec. 14.
The Super Region 3 Offensive Player of the Year is Minnesota-Duluth running back Isaac Odim, while Colorado School of Mines defensive lineman Marc Schiechl is the Defensive Player of the Year.
