Six Argonauts Named to NSCAA Women's Soccer All-Region Team

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Six players from the West Florida women’s soccer team earned spots on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Performance Subaru All-South Region first team, it was announced by the NSCAA this week.  UWF had more All-South Region selections than any other team, and all six players were named to the first team.

The top-scoring team in Division II women’s soccer was led by forwards Shakira Duncan (Kingston, Jamaica/Darton) and Jodi-Ann Robinson (Richmond, British Columbia/Palmer Secondary School) and midfielder Monica Malavassi (San Jose, Costa Rica/Methodist HS), all of which were NSCAA all-region first team picks.  On the other side of the ball, goalkeeper Ali Ryan (Batemans Bay, Australia/Darton) was joined by defenders Noha Saleh (Wellington, Fla./Nova Southeastern) and Jordan Stone (Fort Walton Beach, Fla./Fort Walton Beach HS) as first team picks as well.

Duncan and Robinson formed one of the top attacking duos in all of college soccer, as the two players combined to score 51 goals with 26 assists.  Duncan, a senior, led the way with 31 goals, just two shy of her own school record.  Robinson added 20 goals and a team-high 14 assists in her first year of college soccer.  In the midfield, Malavassi scored eight goals and four assists.  All three players were All-Gulf South Conference picks, while Duncan was named a Daktronics All-America first team selection as well as the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year.

The UWF defense allowed just 1.10 goals and 9.0 shots per game, led by Ryan, Saleh and Stone.  Ryan, in her first year at West Florida, started all 21 games with 56 saves and a .709 save percentage.  Saleh and Stone were the team’s top two marking backs, and both were also impacts on the attacking side.  Saleh assisted on four goals, while Stone scored five goals and added two assists.

The six selections for West Florida marked the most possible for any one team for the NSCAA all-region teams, as schools are allowed to nominate five field players and one goalkeeper.  It was also the first time in school history that the Argonauts had six players picked to the NSCAA all-region team.

The Argonauts reached their 10th NCAA Tournament in 2010 and their ninth in a row, not counting the hurricane-shortened 2004 season.  UWF also won its third straight GSC championship this season and the seventh in program history.
