Saint Michael's Men's Basketball Closes Fall Semester With 81-72 Overtime Loss At Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team (3-6) closed the fall semester, and completed its non-conference schedule, with an 81-72 overtime loss at Queens College on Sunday afternoon.

For Queens (6-1), Akim Neverson tallied a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Anderson Labase added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Lamonte Lans chipped in with 14 points for the Knights, while Terrell Simmons notched 11 points.

For Saint Michael's, freshman Michael Holton, Jr. (Portland, Ore./Sunset/The Winchendon School) netted a team-high 20 points in the loss. Sophomore Travis Warech (Pine Brook, N.J./Montville) added 16 points and seven rebounds for the Purple Knights, but he and Holton combined to shoot 10-of-41 from the field, contributing to Saint Michael's 32-percent field goal shooting (23-of-72).

Saint Michael's used a 12-0 run over a 5:30 span midway through the first half to turn a 14-all tie into a 26-14 advantage. The visitors led 34-29 at intermission, as the Purple Knights made 5-of-13 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.

Queens used a 7-0 run early in the second half to take a 38-36 lead with 17 minutes left in regulation, and the Knights never trailed for the remainder of the period. Saint Michael's stayed close, however, and rallied from a four-point deficit in the final minute of regulation, as senior Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) made a jumper and a pair of free throws in the final 30 seconds of the second half to force the extra session.

After a Holton free throw opened the overtime scoring and gave Saint Michael's a 62-61 edge, it was all Queens after that. The Purple Knights never led again, and the hosts went on an 11-0 run near the end of overtime to clinch the win.

Saint Michael's returns to action on January 2 with a 3:30 p.m. home game versus Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley University at the Ross Sports Center.
