PURPLE KNIGHT WOMEN OPEN HOME SCHEDULE WITH 68-49 WIN VERSUS SOUTHERN N.H.

SMC drains 9-of-15 3-pointers on 37th anniversary of Ross Sports Center debut

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team (2-2, 2-2 Northeast-10 Conference) opened the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday with a 68-49 win versus Southern New Hampshire University in league action at the Vincent C. Ross Sports Center. The contest fell on the 37th anniversary of the first game to be played at the Ross Sports Center, a men's game against Niagara University on December 1, 1973.

Four players scored in double figures for the Purple Knights, led by junior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville), who netted a game-high 19 points, including 5-of-7 from 3-point territory. Senior Logan Pintka (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) earned a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) and senior Meghan McCormack (Barrie, Ont./St. Peter's Secondary School) both shot 4-of-7 from the field while scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For Southern N.H. (1-4, 0-4 NE-10), graduate student Julia Houghtaling (Franconia, N.H.) and junior Megan Smith (Smithfield, Maine) each netted a team-best 10 points, with Houghtaling also grabbing 10 rebounds.

After surrendering the game's first four points, Saint Michael's took control for much of the first half, as the hosts went on a 26-8 run to lead 26-12 with 7:24 left in the opening period. The visiting Penmen were able to trim their deficit to 32-24 at halftime, despite Saint Michael's burying 5-of-9 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes.

SNHU scored the first basketball of the second half to pull with 32-26, but that was as close as the Penmen would get. A 9-0 Saint Michael's run moments later gave the Purple Knights a 50-32 advantage, a double-digit edge that the hosts would not relinquish. The lead swelled to a game-high 24 points, 66-42, with four minutes left, and 52 percent field goal shooting by the Purple Knights in the second half held off SNHU.

Saint Michael's plays its next two games at home, returning to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. non-conference contest versus Chestnut Hill College. SNHU also returns to action on Saturday, hosting Stonehill College at 1:30 p.m.
