PITTSBURG, Kan.—The number one scoring team in the MIAA got off to a hot start in the first half and didn’t look back as Northwest Missouri State defeated Pittsburg State Wednesday night 84-72.
Abby Henry scored a game-high 25 points in the victory as the Bearcats picked up their first conference win of the season.
Henry hit 3-of-4 from behind the arc and had six rebounds and dished out a game-high five assists. Henry is averaging 25 points per contest in the last four meetings with the Gorillas. Northwest never trailed in the game and jumped on Pitt State early, hitting eight first half three-pointers and went on a 41-15 run in the half. The Bearcats led by as many as 27 points and led 49-28 at the break.
Pitt State made things more interesting in the second half, cutting the Bearcat lead down to 10 a couple of times. But, Northwest would seal the game down the stretch by hitting free-throws late despite shooting 61 percent from the line.
Shelly Martin had 17 points for Northwest, also adding three from long-range. Gabby Curtis added 14 to go along with eight rebounds and four helpers. Kyla Roehrig had six points and added 14 rebounds, her third double-digit rebounding effort in the last four games. Tara Roach was just a rebound shy of her first career double-double, as she pulled down nine boards and added 12 points.
All eight of the Northwest’s (5-2, 1-2 MIAA) three-pointers came in the first half as the Bearcats shot 54 percent in the opening half. For the game the Bearcats shot a season-high 47.6 percent, while Pitt State (2-5, 0-3 MIAA) shot 38 percent for the game. Northwest also made 16 free throws, while the Gorillas netted seven from the line.
Up next for the Bearcats will be the final game of their four-game road trip to begin conference play as they travel to face Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
