Kearney, Neb. – Senior Ben Hohensee and junior Joey Wilson led the 4th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team at the Annual Fort Hays State/Bob Smith Open Saturday in Kansas.
The non-team scoring event featured Division I and II schools from around the area, as well as NAIA schools and junior colleges. Overall, 24 Lopers racked up 47 wins, including 17 by fall.
Hohensee (Monet, Mo.) earned his second tournament title of the year as he went 5-0 to win the heavyweight class. Wilson (Half Moon Bay, Calif.), a transfer from Division I UC Davis, also won five times and finished runner up at 165 lbs.
No other Lopers placed but six recorded three wins or more. This large group included true freshmen Alec Chanthapatheth (133 lbs./Grand Island) and Matt Lenagh (184 lbs./Millard North), redshirt freshman Drew Etherton (141 lbs./Lincoln East), sophomores Islam Abitov (165 lbs./Kearney H.S.) and Matt Duffy (174 lbs./Kenesaw) and junior Kazuhiro Fujinawa (141 lbs./Kitakyushu, Japan).
Seeded fourth, Hohensee worked hard for his first place finish. After a first round bye, he beat Central Oklahoma’s Dylan Aguilar, 10-3, in overtime. A fall in 1:20 followed and then Hohensee nipped Oklahoma’s Kyle Colling, 2-1, in the quarterfinals.
Another close battle came in the semifinals where Hohensee upset top-seed Taylor Escamilla of UNO, 3-2. In the finals, he pinned Chadron’s Sam Udell in 3:40 to improve to 10-2 on the season.
The unseeded Wilson used three decisions and a pin to reach the 165 lbs. semifinals. There, he upset Hasting College All-American Jameon Rush, the second seed, 2-1 in sudden victory. Fifth-seed Robert Kokesh of Nebraska proved too much in the finals, however, winning by a 10-1 score.
Also in this class, Abitov (Osh, Kyrgyzstan) won four times, beating wrestlers from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Central Oklahoma. At 133 lbs., three Lopers reached the quarters, including Chanthapatheth. He went 4-2 on the day, including a pin of third-seed Nick Schenk of Oklahoma State.
The Lopers close out the first semester next Saturday when they host the annual UNK Open in the Health & Sports Center.
