Javs Lose in Final Minute

DURANT, OKLAHOMA – Texas A&M-Kingsville freshman Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) scored on a jumper with 1:59 remaining in the game to give the women’s basketball team a 63-62, but Nikki Nester hit six straight free throws in the final 28 seconds to give Southeastern Oklahoma at 68-63 win on Tuesday night.
          
The Savage Storm (6-1) used a 14-5 run near the end of the first half to change a tie game into a 7-point half time lead.  The Javelinas (1-7) came out on fire in the second half scoring 12 of the first 16 points of the period.  They took a brief 39-38 lead after a lay-up by Chelsea Solis (San Antonio/Wagner HS) with 14:37 left.
          
The Storm came right back scoring the next five points of the game.  The Hoggies reclaimed the lead with an 8-0 run to take a 47-43 lead with 11:35 remaining.  The Javs held onto the lead until Ashley Hobbs knocked down a three-pointer with 2:15 left before Thomas gave the Javelinas back the lead and set the stage for Nester’s free throw shooting.
          
The game was decided at the free throw line where Southeastern went 16-for-17 and the Javelinas were only 3-for-10.  Nester finished the game 8-for-8 at the line while scoring 11 points and dishing out seven assists.
          
The Javelinas shot 43.8 percent from the field and made 4-of-12 three-point attempts.  Four players scored in double figures with Solis and Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) each scoring 14 points.  Victoria Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) posted her third double-double of the season with 12 points, 17 rebounds and two blocks.  Thomas added 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
          
The Savage Storm shot 31.1 percent from the field and made 6-of-33 from three-point range.  Hobbs led the team with 18 points and eight rebounds off the bench while hitting 4-of-11 from three-point range.  Jasmine Hughey added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.
          
The Javelinas now have 10 days off before playing again on December 18 at home against Southwestern Oklahoma at 1 p.m. at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
