KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team pulled off a nice victory on Saturday afternoon at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court as they prevailed over visiting Southwestern Oklahoma, 68-64 in overtime.
The Javelinas (2-7) appeared to have the game won in regulation after Kelly Bastow (Bunbury, Australia/Bunbury Catholic) drained her fourth three-pointer on the day with 1:06 remaining in regulation to give the team a 51-46 lead. The Lady Bulldogs (7-2) fought back with a pair of buckets after the Hoggies missed the front end of two 1-and-1 opportunities.
Meagan Barlow (D’Hanis/D’Hanis HS) made the lead three points after draining a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left. The Bulldogs tied the game on a three-pointer by Michelle Fisher with 6.7 seconds to play in regulation.
The Javelinas never trailed in the overtime period as Vickie Gonzalez (Hidalgo/Hidalgo HS) scored on the team’s first possession. A lay-up by Breanna Gonzalez (San Antonio/Christian Academy) gave the Javelinas a 65-60 lead with 1:11 remaining. The Bulldogs cut the lead to two on a lay-up by Shanessa Smith, but Barlow hit a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to play to seal the victory for the Javelinas.
The Javelinas shot 41.8 percent from the field for the game and were 5-of-6 in the overtime period. They went 14-for-22 at the foul line and 8-for-20 from three-point range. Bastow led the team with a career high 16 points as she went 4-for-9 from three-point range. Novella Thomas (Corpus Christi/West Oso HS) added 14 points in 29 minutes before heading to the bench with an injury in the second half. Gonzalez just missed a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Barlow finished with eight points and seven assists as she went 6-for-7 at the foul line.
The Bulldogs shot 40 percent from the field, made 4-of-20 from three-point range and were 8-for-16 at the foul line. Sumiya Darden led the team with 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. Jasmine Noldon added eight points and eight rebounds while Fisher scored nine points and had three steals off the bench.
The Javelinas won the turnover battle committing 20 while the Bulldogs had 24, but SWOSU pulled down 10 more rebounds than the Hoggies.
The Javelinas are back in action on Monday at 6 p.m. against Cameron University at home.
