Beale Ignites Prairie Star Offense

SPRINGFIELD – Junior Bailey Beale scored a career-high 25 points and freshman Megan Bergerud had her first collegiate double-double in the Illinois-Springfield women’s basketball teams 87-70 victory over Eureka Saturday afternoon.

The Prairie Stars scored the games first points and never trailed or allowed Eureka to tie the contest. UIS opened up with a 21-3 lead and eventually was able to extend its advantage to 26 late in the period after a freshman Mallory Beck jumper.

In the first half, UIS scored 18 points in the paint and was able to put in 16 on Red Devil mistakes, while the bench added 17. Leading the charge from the bench was Beck, who scored six points, grabbed three rebounds and dished three assists.

During the second half, UIS kept its advantage over 20 for nearly the entire stanza, as EC got it under 20 with 1:45 to play.

For the game, UIS shot 49 percent from the floor, 55 percent from outside, while EC hit on just 38 percent from the field and 41 percent from long range. The Prairie Stars also had 29 assists to just 20 turnovers.

The 25 points by Beale were second the most in the Division II era, as it was just one shy of tying senior Paulina Pogorzelski’s 26 at Quincy Feb. 4.  For Beale she was 9-of-14 from the field and 7-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Following Beale, Bergerud and Pogorzelski each had 12, while junior Cristina Nevins dished 10 assists and Bergerud also added 10 rebounds.

The Prairie Stars next action is Wednesday, Dec. 29, against Truman State with tip-off slated to go up at 5:30 p.m.
